Guns N' Roses – Yesterdays

“Yesterdays” is a reflective hard-rock song by Guns N’ Roses that appears as the third track on the band’s 1991 album Use Your Illusion II. It was later released as a single in November 1992. The song was written by Axl Rose, West Arkeen, Del James, and Billy McCloud, with production by Mike Clink and the band. It reached the Top 10 in the United Kingdom and became one of the more understated songs associated with the Use Your Illusion period.

The lyrics look back on a past shaped by confusion, missing information, and painful memories. The narrator suggests that growing older brings new understanding, but that understanding does not necessarily make the past more comforting. Old photographs remain, yet they cannot restore what has been lost or explain everything that was never said. The repeated idea that “yesterday” has nothing left to offer is less a rejection of memory than a decision not to remain trapped by it.

Musically, “Yesterdays” combines the blues-based hard rock of Appetite for Destruction with the broader, more polished sound Guns N’ Roses developed in the early 1990s. Slash’s arpeggiated guitar work gives the song a familiar rock foundation, while piano and organ add warmth and depth. Axl Rose sings the verses with restraint before pushing the chorus into a more forceful emotional release. The result is a song that feels melancholy without becoming defeated.

The accompanying music video was directed by Andy Morahan. It was filmed in black and white and showed the band performing in an empty warehouse. Another version combined that performance footage with photographs from the group’s Use Your Illusion tour and images of former members Izzy Stradlin and Steven Adler. The visual emphasis on empty space, aging photographs, and changing lineups reinforces the song’s focus on memory and transition.

Guns N’ Roses formed in Los Angeles in 1985, bringing together musicians connected to Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns. The classic lineup consisted of Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler. After signing with Geffen Records, the band released Appetite for Destruction in 1987. The album initially developed slowly, but songs such as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Paradise City,” and “Sweet Child o’ Mine” eventually made it one of the most successful debut albums in rock history.

By the time the band recorded Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, it had become one of the biggest rock acts in the world. The two albums were released on the same day in 1991 and showed a much wider musical range than the group’s earlier work. Alongside aggressive rock songs, the records included piano ballads, orchestral arrangements, political material, extended compositions, and several covers. “Yesterdays” belongs to the more personal and contemplative side of that period.

The Use Your Illusion era was also marked by serious internal strain. Steven Adler was replaced by Matt Sorum, keyboardist Dizzy Reed joined the lineup, and Izzy Stradlin left during the tour. The band’s enormous success was accompanied by substance-abuse problems, conflict, chaotic performances, and continued lineup changes. In that context, “Yesterdays” can be heard as a song about more than ordinary nostalgia. It reflects the uneasy passage from a turbulent past into an uncertain future, while accepting that some memories will remain even after a person decides to move on.

Guns N' Roses Yesterdays Lyrics

Yesterday, there was so many things
I was never told
Now that I'm startin' to learn
I feel I'm growin' old

'Cause yesterday's got nothin' for me
Old pictures that I'll always see
Time just fades the pages
In my book of memories
Prayers in my pocket
And no hand in destiny
I'll keep on movin' along
With no time to plant my feet

'Cause yesterday's got nothin' for me
Old pictures that I'll always see
Some things could be better
If we'd all just let them be

Yesterday's got nothin' for me
Yesterday's got nothin' for me
Got nothin' for me

Yesterday there were so many things
I was never shown
Suddenly this time I found
I'm on the streets and I'm all alone

Yesterday's got nothin' for me
Old pictures that I'll always see
I ain't got time to reminisce old novelties

Yesterday's got nothin' for me
Yesterday's got nothin' for me
Yesterday's got nothin' for me
Yesterday
