The Killers - Mr. Brightside
Mr. Brightside, the iconic breakthrough single by The Killers, originated from a deeply personal experience of heartbreak for frontman Brandon Flowers. The lyrics were penned by Flowers at the age of 19 or 20, following the discovery of his girlfriend cheating on him in a bar. Guitarist Dave Keuning had already composed the music, and the two combined their efforts to create one of the band's earliest songs. The track's distinctive repetitive structure, particularly the identical first and second verses, arose from Flowers' procrastination in writing a new verse. Vocally, Flowers drew inspiration from David Bowie's urgent delivery in "Queen Bitch" and aimed to emulate Iggy Pop's monotone style from "Sweet Sixteen," though his own sweeter voice and youth shaped the final sound. The song quickly became a staple in The Killers' live performances, even at their very first show. Despite never reaching number one in the UK, "Mr. Brightside" has achieved extraordinary longevity on the charts, earning it the title of the UK's biggest single of all time yet to reach the top spot, and has become a cultural phenomenon, often referred to as the UK's alternative national anthem.
The song was primarily written in late 2001, shortly after Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning first met and began collaborating. It saw its initial limited release in the United Kingdom on September 29, 2003, through the independent label Lizard King. Following this, a more widespread global release occurred in May 2004, preceding the debut of their first studio album, Hot Fuss, which was released in June 2004.
The Killers Mr. Brightside Lyrics
Comin' out of my cage and I've been doin' just fine
Gotta, gotta be down because I want it all
It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleepand she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke and she's taking a drag
Now they're goin' to bed and my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head, but she's touching his
Chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
And I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control
Jealousy
Turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
I'm comin' out of my cage and I've been doin' just fine
Gotta, gotta be down because I want it all
It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this?
(It was only a kiss) It was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleepand she's calling a cab
While he's havin' a smoke and she's taking a drag
Now they're goin' to bed and my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head, but she's touching his
Chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
'Cause I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control
Jealousy
Turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
I never
I never
I never
I never
